We finally decided to include some chicken burgers on our leaderboard so we headed to The Bok Shop to try The Satay Night Fever. We wanted to know if chicken could really compare to beef in gourmet burgers, so surely a restaurant that specialises in chicken would be a great place to find out.
The last time we tried to go the The Bok Shop it was closed but after some subtle hints they updated their online opening hours and we were relieved to arrive out of the cold, harsh winds of Brighton seafront into the stylish and inviting restaurant. We sat down and looked at the menu after being greeted by staff members.
We were surprised to find some colouring pencils on our table and black and white pictures throughout the menu. Of course we proceeded to fill some in with pretty colours like the grown men we are while we waited for our food to arrive.
The cleverly named Satay Night Fever consisted of “Thigh fillet, crunchy satay sauce, chilli jam, lettuce and cucumber.” We also ordered some fries as they are unfortunately not included as part of the burger meal and some Thai basil and jalapeño dip. You can get The Satay Night Fever on its own for £8.50 but if you want fries and a dip you will have to spend at least £17. The restaurant is small with only 4 tables but you could sit at least 6 people on each table.
We sat near the big windows at the front of the building. The burger, fries, and dip were nicely presented in my case. Ashley’s burger was a bit lop-sided and a lot of the components fell out as he was trying to eat it but we are well aware that chicken is harder to present evenly in a burger than a flat beef patty.
The satay sauce was the strongest flavour in the burger and the most memorable takeaway. That combined with the chilli jam was really great and the lettuce and cucumber were a welcome addition. The chicken was succulent, juicy and covered in breadcrumbs.
We gave the burger a score out of 10 in 5 categories which are: Juiciness, Bun, Flavour, Stability and Value for Money. The burger was great tasting, held together well in my case, not so well for Ashley but not terribly. As for a few things we think could be improved, as nice as the chicken was, there wasn’t a huge amount of it and it probably only made it’s way into half of the mouthfuls.
For the first chicken burger we have reviewed The Satay Night Fever is far from bad, but our popular feathered friends have a long way to go before they can compete with a traditional beef patty.
